I’ve been using this filter for a while now and have to say that it’s very good. It can be noisy and you have to add a little piece of filter pad at the exit of the waterfall. But for under $20 you will not find a better filter. It allows you to do custom filters and I have to use cartridges very easily. So you can add any types of media you want and save money as well on filters.2 years running strong! My prefilter was clogged and stopped the biowheel from turning due to low flow. Have a 200 on my 29g and a 150 on a 20g. Both get the water crystal clear with Marine land filter media, don’t bother with the cartridges.

Marineland Penguin Power Filter w/ Multi-Stage Filtration. I really love these filters: the intake guard is secure and has a grid pattern to avoid snagging fins, the flow is adjustable, there’s plenty of room for bio media, and I haven’t had one die yet for being left on during a water change where it went without water for a few minutes. It also starts up again by itself after being powered off or running without water, with no need to pour water into it to get it going. If I only had one fish tank, I would love the extra waterfall sound created by the biowheel; however, with as many tanks as I have, I have removed all the biowheels just so I can hear myself think. Now, the point of the biowheel is to give beneficial bacteria more surface area to grow on to keep your water parameters safe, and that’s mandatory for fish health; but if you put other bio media inside the filter pump with the filter pad, the biowheel becomes very optional. Anyway, I have gone through a lot of HOB filters, and none of the other standard fare does the job as well as these.

  3. Amazon Customer

Bought the 200GPH version. I had a doubt whether I would be one of those customers with missing or broken parts. It arrive in one day after ordering from Amazon. What spooked me was it was delivered with no Amazon box. Opened my front door and I see the MarineLand box on the floor. No taping either. Well it had everything.Wiped it. Hooked it up to my tank. Filled it with water. Turned it on. Everything works fine. The flow is a little small. The flow will not cover all of the waterfall or outlet ramp but most of it. It is a little loud. Not sure if it is because I haven’t had HOBs for a long time or this one is a bit bigger. Last time I had a HOB for main 55 gallon tank was maybe 12 years ago with AquaClear. I bought this to replace my old TOP FIN Power Filter 10 since it started to leaked around the gap or connection from the motor to the propeller for my 10 gallon glass hospital tank. TOP FIN Power Filter 10 was quieter, but it was smaller like the 100 GPH Penguin one.The 375GPH would barely fit a 10 gallon glass, just I had a thought that 375GPH would be too much flow for a 10 gallon glass tank.

Purchased two of these Marineland Penguin 200 filters to replace an old filter (of a different brand) on our 55 gallon Oscar tank. With the old filter I’d have to do huge 80% water changes several times a week to clear up the water. Never liked doing that but the old filter just couldn’t keep up with the waste involved with having an Oscar. So, we switched to two of these Penguins and after about a week of no water changes I did only a 50% and the next day this is the result! 1000 times better than the old filter we had on it! SO happy we switched to the Penguin series filters on this tank! Both filters arrived brand new and in perfect condition. Both were very easy to setup and arrived with extensions to we could set the intake down farther into the tank and have an adjustable mid-tube section to collect water from higher up in the tank. The only noise we notice is a small waterfall trickling effect as long as we keep the water level up. Love this sound! Hearing that trickling sound just means we’ve finally got two excellent filters on our Oscar’s tank whom we’ve raised from a baby for several years now.We couldn’t be happier with these filters!

  5. Honest Reviewer

I was looking to replace my old aqueon filter and after looking at what my options were the Marineland stood out for me. I have to admit the reviews complaining about noise issues made me a little apprehensive. Glancing over the Instructions I noticed Marineland has streamlined the guide to cover 4 units in English and French all on a A4 leaflet. Luckily even with all that detailed information it didn’t distract the ease of putting it together. We don’t really want to know what the mid intake strainer actually does or where exactly is the impeller I’m supposed to check anyway. So far it’s running along nicely and is really quiet. In fact a lot quieter than my aqueon. No complaints from the goldfish either.

These penguin filters are just about the perfect budget filter for most any aquarium. I”ve used them on everything from goldfish to nano-reef systems. There are some issues with them but none that can’t be resolved easily. There are noise and water splashing issues, but just read their website or comment with a question and I’ll help. I know just about every trick in the book to making these fantastic filters.I’m not in any way associated with Marineland. Just giving credit where credit is due.

Filter seems powerful. wish it was more quiet. i am not sure if it is my tank or what – but it sounds like a loud FOUNTAIN. i have tried to tweak to lessen the volume with no success. It’s so loud people can hear it on the phone when i talk (literally everyone i have talked to comments “whats that water noise”… and i say… that is my new aquarium… and they say.. you got a new aquarium?? and i say yes.” i dont recall ever hearing anyones aquarium on the phone before. and i have the aquarium in a cabinet that i close at night to try and lessen the noise. but thats cool. i pretend i am lucky. people pay lots of money for those fountains and noise machines right? i got one for free. the filter works well. the water is clean and clear and i can tell the suction is strong by how much water is running through and pushing out (hence the lovely fountain sound).

I have always used and trusted Aquaclear filters and I have been an aquarium hobbyist for over twenty five years. I thought to go a cheaper route with the Marine land. I decided to purchase this filter for an old 20 gallon tank that that had been unused for some time. Usually you get what you pay for but not in this case.I was amazed to see the water clear up within a few days. I always thought Aquaclear was the best choice however, I never really liked pulling out the basket to change the media. Not only does this filter seem to function as well as other filters changing the media is as simple as it gets. However, there are no options to customize media as in an Aquaclear. There is ample water flow and I love the feature that allows you to adjust water intake form the bottom to the middle of the intake tube. It is absolutely silent except for the water cascade running back to the tank. The only thing missing is a way to adjust water flow.Great value and I would defiantly buy again if the need arises.
